The Crown of a Nation (Mother)
Our sentiment are profoundly true — motherhood is the foundation of a strong, righteous, and successful family. Islam elevates the status of a mother to the highest degree, recognising her sacrifices, patience, and unwavering love as pivotal in shaping not only her children but also the entire Ummah.
Mother: The Pillar of Family and Society
A mother’s love is selfless, her struggles are tireless, and her prayers are ceaseless. She carries her child in her womb with pain, raises them with devotion, and moulds their character with patience and wisdom. Her role does not end at birth; rather, it continues throughout life, guiding her children toward righteousness, knowledge, and responsibility.
Allah (SWT) Himself acknowledges a mother’s hardships in the Quran:
“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.” (Surah Luqman 31:14)
This verse highlights not only the physical hardship a mother endures but also the immense gratitude a child owes to her. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) further emphasised a mother’s status in a famous hadith:
A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and asked:
“O Messenger of Allah! Who among the people is most deserving of my good companionship?”
The Prophet (ﷺ) replied: “Your mother.”
The man asked again, “Then who?”
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Your mother.”
The man asked once more, “Then who?”
The Prophet (ﷺ) replied: “Your mother.”
Only after the fourth time did the Prophet (ﷺ) say: “Then your father.” (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)
This hadith powerfully demonstrates that a mother’s sacrifices, devotion, and influence in a child’s life surpass all others. She is the builder of nations — if she nurtures her children with faith, wisdom, and justice, they become the torchbearers of a truthful and strong Muslim nation.
Mothers as the Architects of a Just and Successful Nation
A nation thrives when its foundation is strong, and that foundation is built in the laps of righteous mothers. The great scholars, leaders, and warriors of Islam were raised by mothers who instilled in them the love of Allah, the wisdom of the Quran, and the courage to uphold justice.
Imam Shafi’i, one of the greatest scholars of Islamic jurisprudence, was raised by a single mother who, despite financial hardship, ensured he memorised the Quran and studied under the best teachers. Her dedication shaped one of the most brilliant minds in Islamic history.
Similarly, the mother of Salahuddin Ayyubi, the great liberator of Jerusalem, raised him with unwavering faith and a strong sense of justice, which later led to his victories and Honorable leadership.
A Mother’s Silent Struggle: A Source of Barakah
Mothers endure sleepless nights, physical exhaustion, and emotional struggles, yet they never complain. Instead, they turn to Allah with dua, seeking His mercy and guidance for their children. Their patience and sincerity bring blessings (barakah) into the family, ensuring prosperity, unity, and success in both worlds.
A mother’s dua is among those that are never rejected by Allah:
“Three supplications are not rejected: the supplication of a father (for his children), the supplication of a fasting person, and the supplication of the oppressed.” (Tirmidhi 3598)
Though the hadith mentions “father,” it includes the mother’s supplication as well, because she prays for her children with the deepest sincerity.
Conclusion: The Ultimate Honour of Motherhood
A mother is not just a caretaker; she is a teacher, a leader, and a warrior in her own way. Through her sacrifices, she nurtures individuals who grow into responsible, faithful, and just leaders. In honouring our mothers, we fulfil one of the greatest commandments of Islam.
May Allah (SWT) bless all mothers with strength, patience, and endless rewards, and may He grant us the ability to serve them with love and respect. اَمِين يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِيْن
